What your day master says about you

In Korean saju, your day master is the heavenly stem on top of your day pillar: the one character that stands for you, with the other seven read around it.

What is a day master in saju and BaZi?

If you have ever wondered "what is my day master?", start here. Saju is the Korean name for the four-pillar system that Chinese readers call BaZi, and both read the same chart.

A saju chart is eight characters. Your birth year, month, day and hour each get a pillar, and every pillar is a pair: a heavenly stem on top and an earthly branch below. The stems and branches come from the old East Asian calendar, which counts years, months, days and two-hour blocks in a repeating cycle of sixty pairs.

Of those eight characters, one is treated as you. It is the stem on top of the day pillar, and it is called the day master (일간, il-gan in Korean). Saju reads everything else in the chart in relation to it: which elements feed it, which ones it feeds, and which ones press on it. That is why the first question a saju reader asks is not your sign but your day master.

A sample chart (March 9, 2000, 2:30 pm, Seoul). Top row: heavenly stems. Bottom row: earthly branches. The highlighted stem of the day pillar is the day master, here 丙, yang fire.

There are ten heavenly stems, so there are ten possible day masters. Each one is a pair of an element and a polarity: wood, fire, earth, metal or water, in a yang (outward, bold) or yin (inward, subtle) form.

How do I find my day master?

  1. Open the saju calculator, a free day master calculator, and enter your birth date. If you were born late in the evening or just after midnight, add your birth time and country too, because they can decide which day you belong to.
  2. Look at the day pillar, the third column from the left. The character on top is your day master.
  3. Read its element and polarity. 丙, for example, is yang fire; 癸 is yin water.

One detail trips people up: when does a new day start? Our calculator follows the rule that a day pillar turns over at 11 pm, not at midnight, and that 11 pm is solar time. It first adjusts your clock time for where your birth country sits in its time zone, which in Korea moves it about half an hour earlier. So if you were born within an hour or so of midnight, enter your birth time and country, and the calculator will work out which day you belong to.

What do the ten day masters mean?

Each day master has a classical image, a picture from nature that sums up how its element behaves. These are the images we use on Bias Match, along with the character emblems you see in the full report.

  • 甲 Gap The Great Tree Yang Wood day master A tall tree that grows straight toward the light and gives shade — the day master that stands its ground.
  • 乙 Eul The Climbing Vine Yin Wood day master A vine that finds its way around every wall, bending instead of breaking — the day master that adapts.
  • 丙 Byeong The Midday Sun Yang Fire day master Warm, visible, hard to ignore — the day master that lights the room.
  • 丁 Jeong The Candle Flame Yin Fire day master A small flame that burns steady in the dark — the day master of focus and quiet warmth.
  • 戊 Mu The Mountain Yang Earth day master A mountain that keeps its shape through every season — the day master others lean on.
  • 己 Gi The Garden Field Yin Earth day master Soft, tended soil where seeds take root — the day master that grows things slowly and well.
  • 庚 Gyeong The Raw Blade Yang Metal day master Raw ore and an unpolished blade, strong and direct — the day master that cuts to the point.
  • 辛 Sin The Cut Jewel Yin Metal day master A cut jewel, refined facet by facet — the day master that shines through detail and care.
  • 壬 Im The Open Sea Yang Water day master A wide sea in constant motion — the day master of range, depth and big currents.

How do the five elements work around your day master?

The five elements move in two circles. In the feeding circle, wood feeds fire, fire makes earth, earth bears metal, metal carries water, and water feeds wood. In the checking circle, wood holds earth in place, earth dams water, water puts out fire, fire melts metal, and metal cuts wood.

Your day master sits somewhere in both circles. Take 丙, the midday sun. Wood feeds it, so wood in the chart counts as support. Water checks it. Earth is what its fire produces, so earth is where its energy goes. Every other character in your chart can be read this way, and saju gives each of those relationships a name, the ten gods, which the saju calculator lists for you.

Polarity adds texture. Yang stems tend to be read as direct and visible, yin stems as quiet and adaptable. Neither is better. A candle flame and the midday sun are both fire; they just shine in different ways.

Is my day master strong or weak?

Two people can share a day master and still have charts that read very differently. The biggest reason is support: how many of the other seven characters share or feed the day master's element, and how strong the season of the birth month is for it.

A well supported day master sits in a chart full of its own element and the element that feeds it. A lightly supported one stands more on its own, surrounded by elements it feeds or that press on it. Saju readers use this balance to pick a useful element, the one that would bring the chart closer to even. Saju readers call the first a strong day master and the second a weak one. Neither end is a good or bad chart; it is a description of where the chart leans, and the saju calculator shows where yours sits.

Lightly supported 丙水金土金水土木 1 of 7 share or feed fire
Two charts with the same day master, 丙 (fire). Fire and wood, the element that feeds fire, count as support; they are marked with a dot.

What a day master can't tell you

A day master is one character out of eight. It is a good place to start, and it is the reason two friends born days apart can get such different readings, but it is not the whole chart.

Bias Match is for entertainment. If you want to see how the rest of your chart works around your day master, the free calculator shows all eight characters, the five elements and your 10-year luck cycles.
