The tables
Why the pair is rated this way
The Snake and the Monkey are one of the six harmonies (六合), the pairs the classical tables say combine. 巳 and 申 are 3 steps apart on the circle of twelve, one yin and one yang, which is part of why they fit.
They are also two of the three branches of a punishment trio (三刑), Tiger 寅, Snake 巳 and Monkey 申, an old pattern read as friction that comes from inside a group rather than from outside it.
The Snake is a fire sign and the Monkey a metal sign. In the controlling cycle fire melts metal, so the Snake is read as the one who sets limits and the Monkey as the one who pushes against them.
The Snake rules the summer month that starts around May 6 and the hours from 9 am to 11 am; the Monkey rules the autumn month that starts around Aug 8 and the hours from 3 pm to 5 pm.
For comparison, the Snake's harmony partner is the Monkey and its trine partners are the Rooster and the Ox; the Monkey's harmony partner is the Snake and its trine partners are the Rat and the Dragon.

In love, friendship and work
Traditionally the Snake is wise, intuitive and private, and the Monkey is clever, playful and inventive. The Snake tends to bring insight and look for trust; the Monkey tends to bring fresh solutions and look for variety.
In love, a six-harmony pair is the classic easy match: the two branches are said to combine into something new, so the bond tends to feel natural rather than negotiated.
As friends or co-workers they tend to keep each other in check, which can sharpen the work as long as neither tries to run the other.

Check two birth years
A zodiac year starts in late January or February, not on January 1: Chinese New Year calendars switch at Lunar New Year, and saju switches at Lichun, around February 4. If you were born in January or early February, you may belong to the year before.
Beyond the birth year
On Bias Match the animal that counts most is not the birth year but the day branch, the animal in each person's day pillar. If two people's day branches are Snake (巳) and Monkey (申), the compatibility calculator scores that check as a full plus, next to five other checks.
