Tiger and Pig compatibility

The Tiger (寅, yang wood) and the Pig (亥, yin water) in the Chinese zodiac: how the classical tables pair them, and why.

The tables

Why the pair is rated this way

The Tiger and the Pig are one of the six harmonies (六合), the pairs the classical tables say combine. 寅 and 亥 are 3 steps apart on the circle of twelve, one yang and one yin, which is part of why they fit.

The Pig is a water sign and the Tiger a wood sign. In the generating cycle water feeds wood, so the Pig is read as the one who supports and the Tiger as the one who grows from it.

The Tiger rules the spring month that starts around Feb 4 and the hours from 3 am to 5 am; the Pig rules the winter month that starts around Nov 7 and the hours from 9 pm to 11 pm.

For comparison, the Tiger's harmony partner is the Pig and its trine partners are the Horse and the Dog; the Pig's harmony partner is the Tiger and its trine partners are the Rabbit and the Goat.

In love, friendship and work

Traditionally the Tiger is brave, competitive and warm-hearted, and the Pig is generous, easygoing and sincere. The Tiger tends to bring courage and look for respect; the Pig tends to bring warmth and look for good company.

In love, a six-harmony pair is the classic easy match: the two branches are said to combine into something new, so the bond tends to feel natural rather than negotiated.

As friends or co-workers the support tends to run one way, so it helps when the one who gets it gives something back.

Check two birth years

A zodiac year starts in late January or February, not on January 1: Chinese New Year calendars switch at Lunar New Year, and saju switches at Lichun, around February 4. If you were born in January or early February, you may belong to the year before.

Beyond the birth year

On Bias Match the animal that counts most is not the birth year but the day branch, the animal in each person's day pillar. If two people's day branches are Tiger (寅) and Pig (亥), the compatibility calculator scores that check as a full plus, next to five other checks.
